My guests for this show are Don Paterson and his son Deacon. The guys took a long drive to meet me at seven for our trip into Spednic Lake which is almost another hour from my place.
We got in to the ramp and the water was very, very low. There were visible rocks that I had not seen before and it made me very nervous to be running around with the Evinrude G2 with a new prop I borrowed from Phil and even more so when a north wind kicked in for the day.
With the water down we found our first stop was almost to shallow to hold much but I got one quite quickly on a Jackall spinnerbait and Deacon got one on a Blue Fox and had another part way to the boat on a fluke. We all got hit several times on the flat but none of the fish was really big. We worked through the center of the cove back over to deeper water and popped a couple more on the main lake point. Don lost one of his lures here to a Pickerel as well.
We spent a few minutes looking for suspended fish over the old creek channel but no luck. We moved over to some rocky shoals coming off the islands and it was hit and miss. We picked up one or two fish on each one.
Drop shotting in fifteen to twenty five feet of water gave us a couple more but the fish were not there in numbers. We did mark a lot of bait and some bigger fish on the Lowrance but they were on the bottom in forty five feet of water and I really do not like bringing Smallmouth up from that depth. That deep and they are prone to barotrauma when you bring them to the surface.
We ran down the lake to the point we found a couple of weeks ago and although it appeared that the fish had moved there was enough left that it was a fun stop and provided Deacon with the lunker of the day on a Jackall Squad Minnow jerkbait.
The wind made the day a little more challenging than I would have preferred but there was enough action to keep Deacon interested and busy and that was good enough for me. I am really going to try and spend some time on this lake next summer to figure out where these fish move to as the seasons change. This one should be on air in about two Weeks. See you on the water
