Miramichi River

Crazy is one of the words to describe the Striped Bass fishery on the Miramichi River. Other words would be outstanding, phenomenal, world class, unbelievable but crazy sums it up pretty well. It seemed like a fitting spot to start off our new season and as always, it did not disappoint.

Shawn and I hit the water today with Economic Development and Tourism director, Jeff MacTavish of the city of Miramichi. Jeff has been so busy promoting the Striped Bass fishery that he hasn’t had time to actually go out and catch some. We took care of that little problem this week. He not only got his first Striper but he also caught the biggest one that came to the boat at just under 9 lbs.

Shawn called this morning and said we put 60 fish in the boat on camera plus all the ones we caught when it was off. You could see massive schools of fishing going by the boat and there were some big ones. The problem is getting the bait past the thousands of schoolies { 2 to 4 lb } that were there. Not such a bad problem to have with the non stop action that is provided by them.

We were using my regular bass tackle for the trip. We had 7′ MH Shimano Zodias and Cumara rods, 2500 Stradics and CI4 reels spooled with 15lb Power Pro. This is the same tackle setups I would use in a smallmouth bass event.

As I mentioned on the show, it may take a bit longer to come up here than it takes to get to one of your regular fishing holes but the drive is worth it for the non stop action and the opportunity to fish a world class fishery. The community is extremely angler friendly and there are lots of access points to get on the river. Remember if you go that it is single barbless hooks only . Maybe we will see you up there next trip.
